Braun-Falco´s Dermatology, 4E

The 4th edition of the “Braun-Falco Textbook”, an international standard text of dermatology, allergy and sexually transmitted disorders has been thoroughly rewritten and reedited and offers a comprehensive state-of-the-art review of the entire field for clinicians in hospital and private practice.

The editors assembled an expert team of authors with outstanding international reputation who present a concise overview of the complete spectrum of dermatology and its groundbreaking progress with particular emphasis on aspects of practical care within the specialty.The treatment recommendations are based on current international guidelines and standards of care, and pay special attention to latest therapeutic progress as well as recent pathophysiological concepts.

A special emphasis has been put on a unique array of high quality figures and a clear, easily understandable structure of the respective chapters. Besides the printed version, the new edition is available as a digital version.

New aspects of the 4th edition that reflect the tremendous and rapid progress of dermatology include an up to date clinical classification of dermatoses, current guidelines and therapeutic concepts in inflammatory and neoplastic diseases, and dermatological aspects of the new Covid-19 infection.

“Braun-Falco`s Dermatology” is a must for specialists and trainees in dermatology, and of great value for all physicians who encounter skin diseases in general.

Preface
The first edition of the Dermatology and Venerology textbook by Egon Keining in Mainz and
his academic student Otto Braun-Falco was published by Lehmann’s Verlag in Munich in 1961,
as was the second edition in 1969.
Since then, the textbook has been continuously revised and expanded in its successive
editions. A number of foreign language translations have been published over the years.
The present 4th English edition is largely based on the 7th German edition released in 2018.
As in previous editions, expert knowledge of colleagues from Austria, Switzerland, Cambodia,
Canada, Japan and the USA was incorporated, partly on new topics. Notably, a new timely
chapter on COVID infections has been added.
The editors are also represented as authors in their areas of expertise. To our great pleasure,
Prof. Lars E. French, Director of the Department of Dermatology and Allergology at the
Ludwig Maximilian University (LMU) University Hospital, has joined the editorial team.
In addition to the print version, an electronic version, as well as electronic access to
individual chapters, is offered to meet the needs of international readers.
Our special thanks go to all the colleagues who have contributed their expertise here as
authors. In today's impact factor-driven world, a large group of particularly motivated authors is
required for a such a comprehensive book covering the broad spectrum of dermatology. Few
countries in Europe or on other continents are traditionally as broadly positioned as dermatol-
ogy in German-speaking countries. Thus, the presentation here of our specialty, including
dermatology, venereology, and allergology, is broad and somewhat distinct from other text-
books in the field.
The editorial office was as previously in Munich. Our special thanks go to Christa
Wandschneider, our longstanding and extremely competent secretary, who has familiarized
herself with enthusiasm with the extensive and complex task.
Most clinical images within the book originate from the photo laboratory of the Department
of Dermatology and Allergology at the LMU University Hospital – originally managed by the
late, gifted photographer Peter Bilek and now with the same skill by his successors Carla
Lingner, Claudia Jakobec, and Diana Lingk. We are proud to have such a professionally staffed
photo lab in Munich. Further photos were taken by our friend Wilfred H. Neuse, former head of
the photo laboratory at the Dermatological Department of the Heinrich Heine University in
Duesseldorf.
Schematic drawings were created by Luitgard Kellner from Munich, highlighting her artistic
